OVERVIEW |

| OVERVIEW | The Texas Primary Reading Inventory is a statewide reading instrument that gives teachers the opportunity to assess their students' reading ability and adjust their instruction accordingly. The test has undergone several changes over the years. The 2003-2004 changes will be reflected in this course. In addition you will find AISD specific TPRI requirements in this lesson (indicated AISD*). Administration Guidelines on how to administer the TPRI for First Grade are on p. 37 of the 'TPRI Teachers Guide', available on your campus. The TPRI for First
Grade is given at the Beginning of the Year
(BoY), the Middle of
the Year (MoY) and End of the Year (EoY).Seven concepts
are considered in the First GradeTPRI: 1. Graphophonemic
Knowledge The test consists of 3 major Sections: the Screening Section, the Inventory Section, and the Comprehension Section. The Comprehension is part of the Inventory Section. SCREENING SECTION The Screening Section at the BoY test contains a Graphophonemic Knowledge task, a Word Reading task, and a Phonemic Awareness task. There is no Screening Section on the Middle of the Year test. The End of Year test only has a Phonemic Awareness and Word Reading task.
INVENTORY SECTION The Inventory Section contains four Phonemic awareness tasks and 5 Graphophonemic Knowledge tasks. In the Reading Comprehension the student answers implicit and explicit questions about a story read by the teacher. The student can be placed in one of five stories, depending on her score in the Placement task.
Beginning, Middle and End of Year Test (BoY, MoY and EoY)The Beginning of the Year TPRI is administered Mid September, The Middle of the Year test will be given Mid January and the End of the Year around Mid Arpil. The tasks on the Screening section are different for Beginning and End of Year TPRI. There is no Screening Section at the MoY.

of the Beginning of Year First GradeTPRI, see BoY (PDF).
DEVELOPED vs. STILL DEVELOPING A student is considered 'Developed' on a task if she meets TEA standards. The label may change to 'Still Developing' in the next task, if she scores below TEA standards for that task. AISD complies with all TEA standards in the TPRI for First Grade. If a student scores 'Developed' on the Screening Section at the Beginning of the Year, the teacher may skip the Inventory Section and proceed to the Comprehension Section. Or the teacher may chose to start with the first task of the Inventory Section on which the student scored 'SD' in the previous test and proceed according to the directions at the end of the task. For a more complete explanation of the 'Developed' versus 'Still Developing' path, please read page 5 in the Teacher's Guide. SCORINGA. A scoring sheet for each student individually ('Student Record Sheet') is provided in your TPRI box. You need to check off on the Student Record Sheets wether the scores reflect the Beginning, Middle or End of Year Test.
Student Record Sheet
B. Do not use the Collective scoring sheet that is provided in the TEA package. Instead, please use the district developed 'Class Summary Form' to record the scores of all students. This form is used to record the scores online into Scholar.
INTERVENTION The data you will gather from this test on each student will give you the information on how to get the sudent on track with the right intervention. It is important that you follow up on the test in this way. For suggested intervention activities, pleasae see this document (PDF).
