Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI) for Grade 2

OVERVIEW

The Texas Primary Reading Inventory is a statewide reading instrument that gives teachers the opportunity to assess their students' reading ability and adjust their instruction accordingly.

The test has undergone several changes over the years. The 2003-2004 changes will be reflected in this course.

In addition you will find AISD specific TPRI requirements in this lesson (indicated AISD*). Administration Guidelines on how to administer the TPRI for Second Grade are on p. 71 of the 'TPRI Teachers Guide', available on your campus.

The test consists of 3 major Sections: the Screening Section, the Inventory Section, and the Comprehension Section.

The Screening Section consists of a word list which the student reads back to the teacher.

The Inventory section consist of 4 tasks, all of which need to be completed by the student. The student writes down the words that the teacher reads to her.

The Comprehension is part of the Inventory Section. The first task in the Comprehension Section is a word list which the student will read. Depending on their score, they will be given one of 4 stories to read. They will then answer questions based on their story.

The Screening and Comprehension Sections are administered to each student individually. The Inventory Section may be given to a group of students at the same time.

Beginning of Year Test (BoY)

All students take the Screening Section at the Beginning of the Year. Students who score 5 or higher in this Section are 'Developed' and skip the Inventory Section. These students go straight to the Comprehension Section.

Students who score 4 or less on their Screening Section are 'Still Developing'. They will go on to the Inventory Section and from there to the Comprehension Section. The 'Stilll Developing' students will re-take the Screening Section at the Middle of the Year TPRI.

Middle and End of Year Test (MoY and EoY)

(AISD*) Students who scored 5 or more on the Beginning of Year test in the Screening Section will only take the Comprehension Section on the Middle of the Year to determine progress in Reading Accuracy. Students that were 'Still Developing' on the Beginning of the Year test (score 4 or less) start with the Screening Section. Depending on their score they will continue to the Inventory Section (score 4 or less), or to the Comprehension Section (score 5 or more).

(AISD*) Students that were 'Still Developing ' on the Middle of the Year test, will re-take the Screening Section on the End of Year test and from there either advance to the Inventory Section or the Comprehension Section. All other students take the Comprehension Section only.
