Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI) for Kindergarten

OVERVIEW

The Texas Primary Reading Inventory is a statewide reading instrument that gives teachers the opportunity to assess their students' reading ability and adjust their instruction accordingly.

The test has undergone several changes over the years. The 2003-2004 changes will be reflected in this course.

In addition you will find AISD specific TPRI requirements in this lesson (indicated AISD*). Administration Guidelines on how to administer the TPRI for Kindergarten are on p. 13 of the 'TPRI Teachers Guide', available on your campus.

Four concepts are considered in the Kindergarten TPRI:

1. Book and Print Awareness
2. Phonemic Awareness
3. Graphophonemic Knowledge
4. Listening Comprehension

Screening, Inventory anf Comprehension Section

The test consists of 3 major Sections: the Screening Section, the Inventory Section, and the Comprehension Section.

The Screening Section consists of one Graphophonemic Knowledge task, and one Phonemic Awareness Task.

The Inventory section starts with a Book and Print Warm-Up Activity, which must be completed by all students entering the Inventory Section. The Warm-Up activity is followed first by Phonemic awarenes tasks, and then Graphophonemic Knowledge tasks. Depending on the score, the student will follow the Inventory track, or be send to the Comprehension section.

The Comprehension Section is part of the Inventory section. In the Comprehension Section the teacher has a choice to read one of 2 stories to the student. The student will then answer implicit and explicit questions based on their story.

Middle and End of Year Test (MoY and EoY)

The Kindergarten TPRI is only administered in the Middle and End of the Year. The tasks for both tests may be different, but the path a student follows is based on her score and basically the same on both tests.

A student is labeled 'Developed' or 'Still Developing' on idividual tasks according to her score. 'Still Developing' students follow a different path than 'Developed' students.

B. Do not use the Collective scoring sheet that is provided in the TEA package. Instead, please use the district developed 'Class Summary Form' to record the scores of all students. This form is used to record the scores online into Scholar. For instructions on how to enter data into SCHOLAR please see the SCHOLAR:TPRI/DRA Data Entry website.
