Beginning North Shore surfer.

Even beginners can tackle the waves on the North Shore, if you know when and where to go.

What you need to start

There are a few critical items every beginning surfer should have:

  • Board shorts These prevent you from acquiring a nasty rash on your thighs. Plus, it decreases a lot of shaving.
  • Rash Guard This prevents a rash on your stomach. (Thus the name.) AND it prevents sunburn. Long sleeves are best in winter.
  • Slippahs For getting to and from the beach.
  • Sunscreen & Zinc Oxide Surfers who don't die in the water often die of skin cancer. We like Ocean Potion because it works and smells great. We also like zinc oxide with tint to look like base. And L'Oreal's long wearing lipsticks can handle the water and protect your lips.

The Board

When you start, rent. Get an idea of what you like. After just a few trips, you won't make much progress unless you get your own board. Used beginner boards can often be found on Craig's List or at stores on the North Shore. Once you have your own, you will learn its balance point and really start to develop as a surfer. Finding a great board is like finding a wedding dress. When you see the right one, you just know.
